The most effective method to obtain the results that we seek in life is to renew ourselves through Prayer. Through prayer we join in consciousness with the Divine. As we pray, we renew our strength, both mentally and physically. Through prayer we gain clarity for moving through current challenges as we access divine energy to renew our daily lives and the lives of others for whom we pray. In our conscious connection with our Higher Power, we may realize that God is truly one with us and is working through us with inspiration for right outcomes.
Scripture: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21
Meditation: As we open our minds, hearts and lives to the experience of prayer in these moments, we are richly blessed. God is the illumined consciousness. Attunement to the Christ presence within, the living presence of God in us, is the main intention of our prayers. Great is the Christ that speaks through me, that heals through me, that greatly blesses me in all ways. I am at one with this Christ consciousness. “In this moment I awaken to your spirit within me, dear God, and see your Presence active in all things.” I awaken to your spirit within me now, and see the divine presence active in all aspects of my life and in all creation.”
Joke: A father was teaching his little child the Lord’s prayer. For several evenings at bedtime the child repeated it after the father. Then one night the child was ready to say it alone. The father listened with pride to the carefully enunciated words right up to the end when he heard his child say, “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us some e-mail”!
A mother invited some people to dinner and at the table, she turned to her 6 year old daughter and asked, “Would you like to say the blessing tonight?” “I don’t know what to say” her little girl replied. “Just say what you hear me say” the mother answered. So the little girl bowed her head and said “Oh Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner tonight?”
Affirmative Prayer in Unity is saying “Yes” to God’s good. In his book “The Universe is Calling” by Eric Butterworth insists that we don’t try to “set things right” but first try to “see things right”. Seeing things right is seeing a situation with God’s eyes of Love. God sees only perfection; sees only through the eyes of love. As we can continue to work toward that vision, moment by moment, our lives become easier because we are in agreement with God. We begin to see things perfect and whole. Both Eric Butterworth and Albert Einstein have said that “This is a friendly Universe with a loving God.”
In Unity we use affirmative prayer. Affirmative prayer is affirming the divine truth in a situation rather than begging or beseeching or bargaining with God for a change in the situation.
One method of Affirmative Prayer is when you meet someone at the level of their problem and affirm the divine truth. This is the method of prayer we use at Silent Unity, when individuals call, write, or e-mail their prayer concerns.
As an example, in praying with someone for physical healing our affirmative prayer would be like this: The life of God is moving through your body now. Every atom, cell and organ of your body responds to its perfect pattern and vibrant health is re-established in your body. You now accept the life of God and feel it as a quiet, comforting, soothing healing energy radiating through your body releasing tension and trauma. Your body relaxes and pain is released as you respond to the life and love of God moving through you re-establishing balance and vibrancy now.
In prayer with someone for moral, mental, or physical strength our affirmative prayer would be like this: The Christ presence is here now, raising you to God’s consciousness of sustaining strength. You are one with the infinite strength of God. You have the power to express the sustaining strength of God. The joy of the Lord is a wellspring with you. You are in joy and in peace. In this moment, you are established in divine strength.
In prayer with someone for inner Peace our affirmative prayer would be like this: You are now established in peace, poise, power, and dominion of God. Your heart is beating in perfect accord with the great heart of God. Through the eyes of love you behold everyone and everything pure and perfect. You are whole, created in the image and after the likeness of God. I now decree in the name and nature of the living Christ, you are awakened to perfect peace right now.
In prayer with someone for inspiration our affirmative prayer would be like this: You are now open to new inspiration. You open the way to greater success in any area of your life by letting go of all the tendencies of the human mind to condemn, to find fault, to become disturbed, or to use unkind or bitter words. Dismissing all else you remember to breathe in the very inspiration of Spirit directing to any personal concern for creative, right progression. You are inspired!
In prayer with someone for a greater realization of love our affirmative prayer would be like this: Love melts all situations that seem out of control. You willingly turn these situations over entirely to God and welcome an infusion of Divine Love. Love radiates through you and through all your affairs. You give thanks to God that love, and your realization and acceptance of love, is the source and sustainer of all your abundant good. All is coming to you in divine order and in divine timing as love resolves all things.
A second method of affirmative prayer is the one Emmet Fox has labeled “The Golden Key”. As Emmet writes: “Scientific prayer will enable you to get yourself or anyone else out of any difficulty. It is the golden key to harmony, success, and happiness. God is omnipotent – all power – and we are made in God’s image and likeness – thus we have been given dominion over all things. The ability to draw on this God-power is not the special prerogative of the mystic or saint. Everyone has this ability. Whoever you are, the golden key to harmony and success is in your hands now.”
The golden Key is this: “Stop thinking about the difficulty, whatever it is and think about God, the Divine, Spirit, instead. Your object is to drive the thought of the difficulty out of your consciousness, for a few moments at least, substituting for it the thought of God.”
What do you know of God? God is wisdom, truth, inconceivable love, creative energy and the source of all creative endeavors. God is present everywhere and has infinite power and infinite knowledge. The golden key is to think about God. If you are thinking about your difficulty, you are not thinking about God. An affirmation may help. Affirm: There is no power but God. I am the child of God, filled and surrounded by the perfect peace, understanding and love of God: God is love; God is light: God is guiding me now. God is with me in this very moment and with all for whom I am concerned.”
Each time you find your attention reverting back to the difficulty, turn your thoughts to God. If you are frightened, anxious, worried, at first it may be difficult to get your thoughts away from material or physical challenges and the fears you hold. But be watchful of your thoughts and turn them back to God when the fears or anxieties assail you. This is the affirmative prayer in the Golden Key method.
(Pass out “Golden Key” pamphlets)
Consider the names of those for whom you are praying. Be sure to include yourself. Then we will pray for them using “Golden Key”.
Prayer Experience: “Through the power and the dominion of the Christ within you, you stand steadfast in self-mastery which has been yours from the very beginning. There is a power and a dominion of the Christ which is more powerful than any situation you are dealing with in your life now or in the lives of your loved ones. God is bigger, and God is within you and within all others. The loving touch of the Divine love brings complete fulfillment into your life now, and continues to do so through you in the days ahead.
During this prayer time, we now “Golden Key” all those on our prayer list. We cast out every thought of worry, fear or anxiety for them or for ourselves. This is a time of communion between ourselves and God’s presence. A correct communion is established and it infills us now with inner peace. God is present in all persons and all situations. We now place our complete trust in God to establish that which is right, good, and orderly for all.”
There is no power but God: I am truly a child of God – one with my beloved source and filled and surrounded by the perfect peace of God;’ God is love; God is light; God is guiding me now; God is with me now and I am one with God. In my oneness with the Divine, God is all there is in this moment. There is no separation. I give myself and my loved ones over to God’s care and keeping in this moment for God is one with them as well. Thank you God for answered prayer. Amen.
Closing: I invite you to use affirmative prayer in both its forms this week… to meet yourself or another individual at the level of their or your presenting need, and then to give it up… up to God with the Golden Key method.
Blessings, Rev. Jan
